Use the dashboard

Your dashboard is at pocketshare.io/app/host once your account can host. It updates every 15 seconds and starts with anything that needs you.

  1. In Hosting › Hubs, click Add hub.
  2. Choose how to enroll:
    • Pairing code (recommended): the page shows one command that installs and enrolls the hub on a Raspberry Pi, Debian or Ubuntu computer (Set up your hub). On Windows, give the code to the installer.
    • Enrollment file, for a hub you set up without typing: the page downloads pocketshare-enroll.json. Pass it to the installer (--file pocketshare-enroll.json, or -File on Windows), or put it on a Raspberry Pi’s boot partition (bootfs), where the installed hub picks it up when it starts.
  3. Leave the page open: it says the hub is enrolled as soon as it connects.

Each code or file works once and expires after 24 hours. Unused ones are listed under Unused enrollment codes on the Hubs page, where you can revoke them.

Plug in a factory-reset phone with USB debugging on and tap Allow on the phone’s Allow USB debugging? prompt. The dashboard tells you if a phone is waiting for that.

Each phone shows a status:

Status What it means
Setting up The hub is checking the phone. The phone’s page lists each check and how to fix a failed one (for example, remove every account from the phone).
Waiting for review The checks passed. PocketShare reviews every new phone before it can be listed.
Approved · not listed Set a price to list it.
Available, Rented, Cleaning Listed and working. Phones are cleaned and checked after every rental.
Paused You paused it. Resume it from its page.
Paused by PocketShare PocketShare paused it, with a note on its page. Only PocketShare can resume it.
Stopped on phone Someone tapped Stop hosting on the phone. Only the phone can undo that: open the PocketShare app on it and tap Resume hosting.
Too hot · paused The battery got too hot (45 °C) or reported a fault. It resumes by itself below 40 °C.
Safety hold The hub paused the phone for another safety reason, shown on its page. It resumes by itself once the hub reports the phone safe.
Quarantined The phone didn’t pass its check after a rental or a wipe. The page lists what failed. Fix the cause and Wipe phone to check it again; otherwise PocketShare reviews it and contacts you if it needs a reset.
Hub offline, Offline, Disconnected The hub or the phone stopped reporting. Check power, network and the USB cable.

A phone’s page also shows its battery, storage and network, and its rental history: when each rental ran, how long, how it ended and what you earned. Who rented the phone and what they did on it are never shown.

Phones are cleaned and checked after every rental. To do the same at any other time (after testing the phone yourself, before listing it again, or to recheck a quarantined phone once you’ve fixed what failed), use Wipe phone on the phone’s page, in its card’s ⋯ menu or in its Settings. The hub clears the data of every app you can open and of apps used since the last cleanup, removes recent apps, empties the clipboard, puts files, apps and settings back to the phone’s clean state, restarts the phone and checks it.

It takes a few minutes, and the phone can’t be rented meanwhile. If every check passes, the phone is back as it was (a paused phone stays paused) and a quarantine is lifted; if a check fails, it’s quarantined. The phone’s page shows the Last cleanup: when it ran, whether it passed, which checks failed and which apps’ data was cleared. A phone can be wiped while it’s available, paused or quarantined after a failed cleanup, with its hub online, up to six times an hour.

On a phone’s page, enter an hourly price within the range shown and save. The page suggests a price from similar listings and tells you how many renters asked for the model, and what you earn per hour rented. A new price applies to new rentals; a running rental keeps its price. Untick Listed in the marketplace to hide a phone without pausing it.

Earnings shows what you’ve earned: your share of phone-time charges, by month and by phone. Earnings stay pending for 14 days in case a rental is refunded, then become payable. Payouts aren’t available yet; your balance is kept until they are.

In Account, choose which host emails you get:

  • Hub and phone alerts: a hub or phone offline for 10 minutes, a phone quarantined, a phone too hot. At most one per hub or phone every 6 hours.
  • Weekly earnings: a summary on Mondays after a week with rentals.

Remove hub stops the hub’s key from working at once and removes its phones from PocketShare. It isn’t possible while one of its phones is rented or being cleaned. Earnings already made stay in your balance.
