Spare Android phone hosting guide.
Decide whether the possible income, upkeep and running costs make sense for a spare phone. Then check the current pilot requirements. No phone changes are needed to join the waitlist.
Controlled private pilot. Public paid rentals and host payouts are not open. The current restricted rental test needs a computer and USB/Appium connector. Wait for device acceptance before setup or a reset.
Is spare-phone hosting passive income?
It could become a low-effort source of supplemental income if paid hosting opens. An accepted phone would need completed paid rentals to earn. Public paid rentals and host payouts are not open today.
Allow for ongoing attention. Hosting would involve setup, approved software updates, reliable power and internet, and occasional device checks or connection problems. The current private rental test also needs a host computer and USB/Appium connector; the planned phone-only setup is still being qualified.
Compare income with running costs. Future income would depend on device eligibility, rental demand, completed rentals, rates and fees. Public rates are not established and earnings are not guaranteed. Electricity, internet use or plan limits, maintenance and device wear can add costs even when there are no rentals.
Start with a phone you already own. Do not buy a phone for PocketShare before supported devices, paid hosting availability and terms are confirmed. Joining the waitlist is free and needs no installation or reset.
Choose a dedicated spare Android phone.
Use a phone you own and can set aside for testing. Keep your everyday phone and its personal apps, accounts, photos and messages separate. Do not buy a device for PocketShare before supported phones and hosting terms are confirmed.
There is no public list of phones qualified for rentals. A phone turning on or passing diagnostics does not establish compatibility, isolation or rental qualification. Wait for acceptance and device-specific instructions.
Check Android version and updatesUnderstand the current pilot connection.
The private rental test is restricted to an approved offline fixture. It requires a host computer running a USB/Appium connector with the phone attached. This is the current test setup, and it is available only to approved pilot accounts.
The Android host app can enroll a phone and report health. Those diagnostics do not replace the connector or prove general remote app control. Physical-phone rental qualification is still pending.
The planned setup is one host app and account controls, with power and a network. Public paid rentals and host payouts are not open.
Already invited? Read the private pilot setup for the current downloads and connection instructions. The public waitlist needs no installation.
Confirm your backups and account access.
Before making changes to an accepted phone, save the photos, contacts, messages and files you want to keep. Check that you can open them on another device. Not every app backs up all its data.
Confirm that you can access important accounts and authenticator apps independently of this phone. Keep the account credentials and screen-lock code you would need for the manufacturer’s setup process.

NO RESET IS NEEDED TO JOIN THE WAITLISTIf your phone is accepted, follow the approved setup instructions and your manufacturer’s guidance. A factory reset erases the phone’s apps and data. Check your backups and account access before following any reset instructions.
A dedicated hosting phone should not contain your personal apps, photos or messages. Use only the official PocketShare downloads supplied with an invitation. Do not weaken device security or grant additional access just to pass a health check.
Google’s reset guide and manufacturer helpConsider power, network use and ongoing costs.
An accepted phone would need suitable charging equipment and a reliable network during its intended hosting hours. Follow the manufacturer’s charging guidance. Consider electricity, internet use or plan limits, and device wear before committing.
Future income would depend on actual completed paid rentals and the eventual rates and fees. Being plugged in, online or enrolled does not earn money. Public rates and payout eligibility have not been established.
Approved pilot users can review enrolled devices and health reports in the private workspace. A health report describes a diagnostic result; it is not a booking, payout or guarantee that a phone can safely run a rental.
